PlayStation 3 is the new console of Sony to answer to its competition, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. It is also considered to be the third generation of PlayStation.

PlayStation 3 will be released on the markets of Japan and US in the year 2006 while Australia and Europe will be able to get it in 2007. The reason for the delays in release in European and Australian regions is due to the lack of blue-ray drive diodes.

Sony announced that the Playstation 3 will be released in two configurations. The first one is the premium version. Units with this configuration come with Blu-ray disc drive, USB ports, Wi-Fi connectivity, memory card readers, and an internal 60-Gb hard drive. The alternate version, on the other hand, has only a 20-GB internal hard drive and does not come with Wi-Fi features and memory card readers. However, the user has the option to upgrade the hard drive and connect memory card readers via adapters. The Wi-Fi feature, however, cannot be installed.

Using the blu-ray drive, users not only can play their favorite games but their movies and game discs as well. This is all thanks to the 54 GB data capability of the blue ray disc which gamers won't need for more space.

The easy to carry hard disks can also offer the PS3 system with its essential storage space which is required for network applications and other files for PlayStations. Furthermore, it can also be utilized for game point saving.

In the United States, the expected pricing release of the 20-GB is $499 and $599 for the 60-GB. In Japan, the price lists about $430 for the 20-GB. Sony has chosen to set an open price for the Japanese retailers for the 60-GB model. Meanwhile, for the European release, the 20-GB and the 60-GB versions cost $550 ad $660, respectively. In Australian regions, the premium model will retail for $680 while the 20-GB will retail for $570.

For the appearance of the new PS3, it is said to feature neat or sleek curves and lines that appeal to a lot of users. The casing of PS3 is also designed with a cooling system that manages the heat produced by the power supply and the cell processor. A lot of people think that due to the excessive power that PS3 eats up, the console will perform in a boisterous way, however, the PS3 can process without even making the slightest sound.

The past version of PS3 was available in black, white and silver colors. Although in its first launch, the only color available was black. Sony has provided an added touch in terms of elegance in its design by ensuring that only the highest quality of materials is used. During the official sneak peak of the layout or design of the PlayStation 3, its outer part was designed with a color of dark and glossy black. Although, the system's shell looks as somewhat of a transparent black rather than a glossy one. The PlayStation 3 measure 12.8" x 3.8" x 10.8" in dimension and weighs about 11 lbs.

The latest product of Sony can also be positioned horizontally or vertically. It can also be moved while a game or movie disc is playing without damaging or lowering its performance.
